Nestled in the heart of Kyoto's historic Higashiyama Ward, Kagizen Yoshifusa Kodaiji is not just a cafe; it offers an immersive experience that transports you to a realm of traditional Japanese sweets and serene surroundings. This hidden gem, located at 471 Shimokawaracho, stands apart from its bustling main branch in Gion, providing an oasis of calm where you can indulge your senses and escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

The atmosphere is quintessentially Zen, with minimalistic decor that invites tranquility and reflection. Large windows allow natural light to flood in, creating a bright and airy space where the soothing elements of nature can be appreciated. The soft sounds of the environment blend seamlessly with the gentle murmur of conversations, making it the perfect spot for a peaceful respite after a day of exploring.

Kagizen is renowned for its traditional Japanese desserts, particularly the Kuzukiri—a refreshing summer treat made from arrowroot noodles served icy cold, paired exquisitely with a rich brown sugar (Kuroya) sauce. Imagine delicate, slippery strands of the chewy dessert gliding through your mouth, catching the essence of sweetness without overwhelming your palate. For those who enjoy a touch of flair, the complimenting Konpeito candy and hot tea served upon your arrival adds an authentic touch to the experience, making each visit more than just a meal but a delightful ceremony of tradition.

Customers rave about their experiences, with one visitor, Irving E, lauding the ambiance and peacefulness that comes with a visit to Kagizen, particularly when compared to busier spots. Another reviewer, VL Kong, emphasizes that it’s essential to set aside time for sweets in Kyoto, highlighting Kagizen’s famous Kuzukiri once more as an exquisite and cool treat perfect for a hot day.

The caring service only enhances the warm experience, with staff who are attentive without being intrusive—a detail that Trang Thao Nguyen appreciated during her visit. She, along with many others, found solace in the beautiful decor and the scrumptious desserts. Nisa confirmed this sentiment, noting the lovely hint of matcha in her drink and the delicious poured red bean mochi soup that delighted her taste buds.

In a world where dining can often be hurried and transactional, Kagizen Yoshifusa Kodaiji redefines what it means to savor a moment. It's not just about the delicious offerings, but about experiencing the cultural tapestry of Kyoto through its culinary masterpieces. So, if you’re planning a visit to this beautiful city, be sure to carve out time to indulge in this enchanting cafe—the perfect combination of exquisite taste, serene atmosphere, and a taste of Japan's rich heritage awaits.

Great ambience and good service. The shop isn’t really crowded, especially compared with the main branch so I highly recommend people to come here. You can enjoy traditional Japanese desserts in a Zen setting. When you arrive, they serve you Konpeito candy and hot tea. I got the arrowroot noodles (Kuzukiri) with black sugar (Kuroya). For a hot day it was lovely as it was cold, sweet and refreshing.

In Kyoto, it's a must to plan some slots just for sweets and desserts during the afternoon. Kagizen is an old name, famous for their Kikujyuto and Kuzukiri. And they have three branches. One is the Gion, which is always packed and another one is around Kodaiji area. Less crowded and peaceful to enjoy your sweets. Only tried the Kuzukiri. Chilled Kuzukiri with water & ice, as well as the brown sugar cane molasses are elegantly housed in urushi-wares. Very smooth and the accompanying molasses mix is just right, not too sweet. Refreshing, especially good to combat the afternoon heat.

We ordered Kuzukiri, a fresh and icy cold dessert served with brown sugar sauce on a hot day and we couldn’t stop complimenting. I prefer to dip only a part of “the noodle” in the sauce because I don’t like super sweet dessert. The atmosphere was “zen,” making us felt completely separated from the crowded street outside, which was perfect after a long walk! The lady who served us was also very kind - when we asked for direction to the next attraction, she even drew out the map and made sure that we understand where to go.

A jewel of a place. Lovely decor and beautiful furniture. We went around 1pm and it was empty so we could enjoy the silence and window viewing. The staff is very kind and the matcha was amazing. I tired the red bean mochi soup and ot was sooo delicious!

We have been hunting for the best matcha in Kyoto.. this place is by far the best matcha (totally drinkable without milk or sugar), with the best atmosphere and by far the most traditional.. as well as very well priced

Zen ambience with super high quality products. This experience exists since the Edo Period. They use seasonal ingredients and local products. Completely worth the experience. Each person has to order something, so not a place to share one drink or plate. The iced matcha was amazing.
